Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square is in the center of Beijing. It is the world's largest square. The area is 500,000 square meters and it can hold one million people. The Square is listed top among Beijing's 16 scenic spots. Known as Chengtian men (Supporting-the-Heaven Gate) during the Ming Dynasty, Tiananmen is situated at the north of the square. The design of the tower has been used as a symbol on the national emblem.

At each corner of the Tiananmen Tower is a marble pillar engraved with flying dragons and clouds. The structure is called Huabiao in Chinese and is a symbol of supremacy built in front of Chinese architecture. On the top of each column perches a scared animal greeting the emperors return to the city.

Here, you can see the Monument to the People's Heroes dominates the center, the Great Hall of the People and the Museum of the Chinese Revolution and the Museum of Chinese History to the east and west.
