Kaili

Kaili is the capital of the Southeast Guizhou Miao & Dong Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture. There are many grand ethnic festivals in the region. The wooden drum dance is an important festival for the Miao of the Kaili area. In the hot summer, the Miao girls, living several miles away, will come with their parents to danc e the wooden drum dance. In this wooden drum festival, while the young girls are dancing to the rhythm of the wooden drum, the young men are looking for their life partners. When the curtain of night comes down, the young women and men will express their affections for each other by antiphonal singing.

Matang village & Langde Miao village
Each village needs you half day for these two villages. For organized tourist, a special welcoming ceremony and performance can be arranged to you. Matang is an interesting Gejia village that produces traditional batik customs, Gejia women will begin to learn wax printing at age of 8-9, are skilled at batik, petit point and embroidery, in this village (19km to Kaili), you will fall in an art world of batik. And another one, Langde Miao village(include 2 parts: upper and lower), known as the Miaos Ethnic Village Museum, with different Miaos style houses (Diaojiaolou), is recommended for its silver ornaments, embroidered consumes and local lusheng music and dance performance. You can see some large kiln complexes where bricks and tiles are made by hand with water buffaloes pudding the muddy clay nearby on the road to above 2 villages. Along this river, wooden water wheels are spreading still works there.

Tonggu Miao village
30km from Kaili, located in Majiang County decades years ago, it was a small Miao village unknown to the outside, and all people are all good at cross-stitch needle work and embroidery. With the help of some professional artists, the villagers began learning painting and it became more and more popular in this ancient Miao village. There is a bold and primitive sense in the pictures.

Now, Tonggu village is well known for its painting full of local color, satisfying aesthetic tastes of modern people. That is the reason why these paintings became sensational when exhibited in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, as well as in Japan and Syria. The village fame as "Home to Modern Folk Painting in China" from the Ministry of Culture, and entitled as "a tourist spot of the Miao peoples customs" in 1988 by Guizhou Provincial Government.

Tonggu mean "Bronze Drum" in Chinese, Tonggu Dance keeps alive in most of Miao villages now.

Leigong Mountain
Located 15 kilometers (nine miles) east of Kaili, Leigongshan is the most intriguing scenic area of the Miaoling Mountains. It gained its reputation as a National Nature Reserve because of its abundance of overlapping mountain ridges, flourishing verdant plants, valuable and rare animals, and historical war remains.

It is the highest peak in the mountain ranges of Qiandongnan (southeast Guizhou Province), so Leigongshan is rumored as the place where the God of Thunder ("Leigong" in Chinese) lives. Every summer, thunderstorms can be heard resounding on the mountains, which is why people called it Leigongshan (or Leigong Mountain).

The top of Leigongshan Nature Reserve can be reached at a 2178.8-meter (7148.2-feet), where visitors can enjoy the sunrise, admire the sunset, and also have a panoramic view of the Miaoling Mountains. A large number of rare animals wandering among the virgin forests may make one feel one has really returned to nature. The climate on Leigongshan is typically rainy and wet, and changes constantly, making summer as comfortable as spring and autumn. That makes it an ideal summer resort for tourists.
