Kunming - Western Hills

The Western Hills, over 2,500 metres above sea level, refers to a range of five mountains stretching over 40 kilometres. Located at the west bank of the Dianchi Lake, it is set in mountains well covered by evergreen woods and filled with sweet songs by lovely birds.

Viewed from a distance, the skyline of the Western Hills forest reserve resembles a beautiful maiden reclining leisurely alongside of Dianchi Lake with her long hair drifting casually in the mirror-like water. It is for this reason that the local people gave the Western Hills the nickname, Sleeping Beauty Hills. It forms a delightful contrast with Dianchi Lake.

The most famous four places on the Western Hills are: Huanting Temple, Taihua Temple, Sanqing Pavilion and Dragon Gate.

Huating Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in Kunming and its history stretches back to 900 years. It is a country temple of the Nanzhao kingdom. Taihua Temple located two kilometers from the Huating Temple. It is famous for the rare flowers and trees that fill its gardens and courtyards. South of Huating Temple, Sanqing (Three Purities) Pavilion was built as a summer house in the early 14th century for a Mongol prince. The two-storey pavilion is a now restful teahouse where visitors can refresh themselves from their journey and enjoy a splendid view. Dragon Gate is the steepest spot in the Western Hills and well worth climbing up the winding old stone stairs because the view is spectacular. When standing at Dragon Gate and seeing the splendid views, you cannot but feel awe-inspired by the vision, dedication, and reverence for nature and the people who created this walkway. Ones first view from here is one of those special moments in life when you feel as if you have almost reached the top of the world.
