Six Baiyan Temple

A famous Buddhist temple in Guangzhou City - the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees is located in Liurong Lu at the heart of the city, is over 1,400 years old. It was built in 537 in the Liang dynasty during the Southern dynasties (386-581).

The main buildings in the temple are the Flower Pagoda built in 1097, Guang-Yin Hall and Shrine Hall.

The Flower Pagoda is of brick-and-wood construction. The present pagoda was restored built in 1097, and stands over 50 meters (about 164 feet) tall in the middle of the temple. It had collection of 1,000 Buddhist sculptures since then. With the hanging bells on the eaves of the tower, it looks like a flower pole from a distance and so people call it the Flower Pagoda. The pagoda itself is a beautiful sight and it is also a good place to view the panorama of Guangzhou City.

The Main Shrine Hall is the most important construction of the temple. It is 14 meters high and 300 square meters large lying in the west of the Flower Pagoda. There are three big Buddhist sculptures made up of yellow brass with their names in the hall. Built in 1663, they are all 6 meters high and weighting over 10 tons. They are the biggest ancient sculptures of Guangzhou. It is rare to see such bronze statues in one temple.

Also built in 1663, the Guanyin Hall is beside the main shrine hall and has 4 meters high sculpture of Buddha Guanyin.
