The Bund

The Bund (Wai Tan) is regarded as a landmark as well as the birthplace of Shanghai. Located at the banks of the Huangpu River between Waibaidu Bridge and Nanpu Bridge, the New Bund has a total length of 4 kilometers. Being one of the Top Ten Shanghai Attractions, It rests against the Huangpu River on the east, and on the west was the famous 52 unique buildings in multinational styles of architecture, which lasted for over a century and were the best in Asia for their time.

The Bund, or the waterfront, is surrounded by over 20 architectures along from No.1 to No.33, west of No.1 East Zhong Shan Road. Many of them are bank buildings. The others are commercial buildings, national organizations, restaurants, clubs, press etc. The Bund represents the architectural buildings of finance and trade. And these big banks as well as big companies are of international feature, thus Shanghai is made internationalized. Most of the architectures were built before 1930s, having got no radical change for the Bund, or waterfront, at present.

Cruise boats meander eastward along the golden waterway to the intriguing "three-layer waters" at the Wusong Mouth. It is also the most famous sightseeing spot in Shanghai.

Now, a 646.7-meter-long sightseeing tunnel, connecting the bund to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower is complete and was opened to the public in October 2000, through which visitors can experience a marvelous trip under water.
